Greetings to all,
I am LaMarlon Wilson, Superintendent of the Mississippi Schools for the Deaf & the Blind School District. I am so very humbled and grateful to have this opportunity to learn alongside so many great educators, leaders, and most of all, our students. This journey will be amazing, as we work to achieve aligned systematic instructional and operational practices, greater awareness of the MSDB’s talent and mission, and ultimately, improved outcomes for all students who are served and nurtured by the MSDB. Each individual student’s goal will be our focus, as we continue to prepare them for assessments, graduation, and life beyond the K-12 brick and mortar school buildings. Our schools and district are led by very capable school leaders, and a district leadership team who is student-centered and outcomes-driven. We aim to promote student talent in academia, athletics, and activities in efforts to create avenues and pathways for their future. We look forward to partnering with you to help us in realizing the aforementioned. If you should ever need to contact us, please feel free to connect with my office. We know that, together, we can achieve more.
LaMarlon J. Wilson, native of Newport News, VA, matriculated at Mississippi Valley State University, achieving a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music in 2009 (with a minor in History). He then attended William Carey University, graduating with a Master of Music Degree in Music Education in 2011 and later from Arkansas State University, where he completed a Specialist in Education degree in School Leadership in 2018. Wilson was a student of the Mississippi Alternate Path to Quality School Leadership in 2015 - Grenada Cohort. His additional studies include doctoral work at the University of Mississippi, and the Visual Impairment certification program at Jackson State University (2020). Mr. Wilson began his career as a Choral Music Teacher at Coleman Middle School, where he was responsible for the instruction of school choirs, in which he led his performing groups to State Choral Music Festivals each year, earning Superior Ratings in Sight Singing and Performance. Mr. Wilson became an Assistant Principal in 2015 at T.L. Weston Middle School , and then Greenville High School in 2016 (all in Greenville Public School District), where he led groups of teachers in professional learning to build their capacity in pedagogy and content-knowledge, and supported with devising plans to realize the vision of the School Principal. Mr. Wilson’s greatest accomplishment was having had the opportunity to lead a school one step closer to becoming a “successful school”. He was named the Principal of Humphreys County Junior High School (Humphreys County School District) in July 2017, serving grades 6 - 8. The school’s accountability designation was an F rating, and had been for 5 years prior to his appointment. Wilson was able to lead the school through much needed cultural transformation, including; improving student-teacher relationships, community trust and support, instructional practices and systems, and teacher buy-in regarding the instructional vision of the leader during his inaugural year. Mr. Wilson approached the school leadership team during the summer of 2018 to assess the structures, systems, goals, initiatives and strategies from the previous year. With their insight, Mr. Wilson was able to fine-tune the instructional plan, benchmark goals and implementation strategies for teacher preparation. After the 2018-2019 state test administration, it was determined that the Humphreys County Junior High School showed enough growth to move from an F designation (2nd to the lowest middle school in the state of Mississippi according to the state’s accountability model) to a D designation with 5 certified teachers for approximately 360 pupils. In addition to improving the school’s letter grade, the school grew enough to move from being identified as a CSI School (Comprehensive Support and Improvement), the most significant school improvement rating, to a TSI School (Targeted Support and Improvement), under the Mississippi Department of Education’s Office of School Improvement. He would say that his greatest contribution is mobilizing literacy initiatives, schoolwide, by equipping all teachers with literacy strategies that help students to dissect complex text and learn content through informational text. The Humphreys County Junior High School was reconfigured to include 5th grade, and renamed O.M. McNair Middle School, in which Mr. Wilson served as Principal until October of 2021. In 2021, Mr Wilson was named Director of Teaching, Learning & Instructional Leadership in the Mississippi Achievement School District, and then Executive Director of Schools & Academics (later changed to Executive Director of Instruction, Professional Development, Technology, Accountability & Digital Resource Integration). In these roles, Mr. Wilson worked to supervise 3 district departments, and support 9 School Principals (to include CTE Directors) and their instructional leadership teams. Through these collaborations, the Mississippi Achievement School District (Yazoo City Municipal Schools and Humphrey County Schools) transformed school instructional programming to have the impact of moving the district from 6 out of 7 schools being F-rated, to only 1 out of 7 schools having a F-rating designation. Wilson attributes this work to strong systemic practice that is codified in written procedures and expectations. In 2023, Mr. Wilson was named a fellow of the Racial Equity Leadership Network with the Southern Education Foundation, where he collaborates and learns alongside Superintendents and other district leaders from Georgia, Texas, South Carolina, Tennessee, Louisiana and Wisconsin. Mr. Wilson is a proud and active member of Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. (Alpha Psi Omega Chapter), the Improved Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks of the World and Free & Accepted Masons (Prince Hall Affiliated).
